San Marino

Image
The microstate San Marino is surrounded by Italy and it's one of the smallest countries in the world, only 33 000 people live there. It's the only country with more vehicles than people and when we arrived by bus to the mountain that forms the capital, we noticed that some kind of classic cars race was going through the country. People were standing on the side of the roads cheering while the drivers waved to them. The city was founded by Saint Martinus and several Christian refugees in the year 301 and quickly became the center of Christian refugees that fled Roman persecution. The city on top of the mountain Titano was guarded by three towers that was constructed in the 11th, 13th and 14th century and they are now the main tourist attractions. More than 3 million tourists invade the country each year and me and my friend Andreas was two of them. It was a really bad day for going to San Marino since the view is the main thing and we went there on a rainy and foggy day. I c

Romania

The bad thing about going to all countries in the world is that you have to go to places like Romania, when you don't want to. Both me and my friend Andreas didn't want to go so we made Romania a quick stop on the way to Cyprus, so that we would only have to spend one night and the next morning in the capital of Bucharest. When we arrived we quickly understood that Dracula was the superstar even though we weren't in the area of Transylvania. Many things were named after him like alcohol called Draquila and so on. When we got in to the city center we could see that Bucharest is made up of massive areas that are empty, because everybody has to use cars because of the long distances, so no one walks. It's ironic but at the same time quite funny. When we got to the hotel and stepped out on the balcony my expectations about Romania quickly changed, yes it still seemed like a poor country but not in a bad way. It was worn down but had the charm and the nice vibe that I al

Portugal

When I was a kid and tired of the endless bad weather of Sweden, I used to read the last page of the newspaper where the weather forecast was, only to find out that the sun was always shining in something called Portugal. In the back of my mind I imagined Portugal to be heaven on earth because of this and 25 years later I finally arrived with my girlfriend Felicia in the capital Lisbon, to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. We chose to stay at a hostel for once and not a hotel. Hostels aren't my cup of tea since it's mostly infested by loud young people who wants to get drunk and who can't afford to stay at hotels. I'm too old for that, but since the hostel had a rooftop pool with seaview we just couldn't resist.  I enjoyed the fact that the hostel was situated on the first floor inside a train station as well, since I love to stay at unique places. We quickly understood that the place would live up to my image of what a hostel is and we didn't en

Poland

Me and my mute girlfriend Felicia went on a cruise from Karlskrona in Sweden to Gdynia in Poland to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. She isn't really mute but this time around she was because she was so sick that she couldn't speak. It was a weird and frustrating feeling not to be able to communicate with her but as soon as we arrived in Poland, she got a bit better at least! The boat trip wasn't that nice, it felt like a boat that had been left behind from the 80's and maybe not cleaned since then. And drunk Swedish men spoke openly about going to Poland to have sex with prostitutes. When we arrived in the harbour of Gdynia we were met by a gray fog called Poland. We had just one day to see the three cities of Gdynia, Sopot and Gdansk that have grown together as one. We quickly left Gdynia for Sopot by train, and the train was like a time machine to the 90s, with the guys dressing in 90's fashion like bomber jackets and the girls wearing tiny skirts even th

New Zealand

I was sure I was going to move to New Zealand one day and the whole purpose of travelling the world by going to China, New Zealand and then USA before going home again was to see my new home before I went there permanently. I love the sun, dramatic landscapes and the sea so what more could I ask for than New Zealand?  After arriving from Hong Kong I was getting really tired of travelling through so many time zones, at the same time as I could never fall asleep on the planes. I took a quick look at the lines in custom and thought it might go quicker in the left lane instead of waiting behind Christian who was standing in the right lane, so I switched and the custom asked me stupid questions like "what are you going to do here?" and I gave dumb answers back like "visit your country". When he asked if I travelled alone and I said that I travelled with Christian in the other line he got suspicious but let me through after a while. When I came out of the customs I wa
