Saint Kitts And Nevis

Saint Kitts was home to the first British and French colonies in the Caribbean, and has also been titled "The Mother Colony of the West Indies". When my friend Christofer and I approached the capital Basseterre on a cruise ship I thought the island had a feeling of Scotland to it, watching it from a distance. The mountains made it look like a greener and sunnier version of the northern parts of Great Britain, and English is even the official language still.

The country consists of two volcanic islands that are separated by a three kilometer strait called The Narrows. It's supposed to be the land of beautiful waters, but the first thing we noticed was that the sea didn't look as appealing as it had been on the previous islands we had visited in the Caribbean. So we decided to walk a short distance to a luxurious pool area instead, called Palms Court Gardens. On our way we saw some pelicans and some skinny birds with long legs we had never seen before, so we decided to call them the runway models of birds because of their appearance.

An enchanting garden with a love for Mediterranean architecture and landscaping welcomed us on the hill when we arrived at the Palms Court Gardens. The pool area had stunning views over the neighbouring island Nevis in the background, and the canon facing the sea from the lounge area was actually an original from a sunken battle ship.

We ordered our first local beer like 10 AM and then we had a few drinks, like Singapore Sling which I've always wanted to taste. Tipsy on the alcohol I enjoyed the refreshingly cold infinity pool in the hot heat and even got company from a statue lying by the pool side.

Soon we would get more company from Dalila, Gabriella, Natacha and many of the other staff members from the cruise ship. Apparently it was free entrance for the cruise crew so many of them came to enjoy a well-deserved break by the pool side. Big up to the Palms Court Gardens for that!

Exotic plants and majestic palms, accompanied by soothing music, often lounge covers of great songs, made this a day to remember.

We also "cheated" a bit before tonight's ABBA quiz at the ship by listening to their best of album and having an intro quiz for ourselves. I went up to the patio with strong Moroccan influences to go to the toilet and I managed to lock myself in. I almost gave up before I finally got myself out. After that we made sure to go to the toilet next to the vintage 1978 Silver Shadow Rolls Royce further away in the garden instead.

There was a beautiful, romantic beach house style cottage on the grounds and I would have enjoyed staying there if I was travelling with my love interest. But since I was there with my friend Christofer I ended up getting hammered instead, pretending to pass out on a turtle statue with a copy of Michelangelos "David" next to it.

Two girls appeared at the gates of the garden and I started to talk to them hoping they hadn't seen me lying about on the turtle. It turned out they were from the neighbouring island of Nevis and it's always fun to chat a bit with natives to get a feeling of how everyday life is like at the island. Saint Kitts and Nevis is the eighth least populated country in the world, and to the surface the country is also one of the smallest in the world, so I can imagine it being pretty special to live there. I can regret that I didn't try to keep in contact with them, because it would be fun to know more about their country and their lives. I pretty much live to travel to experience different ways of life, how nice it would be to have two friends in Nevis!

Back at the cruise ship we talked to Murad, one of the entertainers, by the ABBA quiz. I had met him before on the ship and from day one I had recognized him without being able to understand why. Maybe he looks like someone I know or a big star! I was in Turkey the year before so maybe I saw him on the streets when visiting Istanbul, but I doubt I would remember that since 15 million people lives there. He had been working for many months on the sea now and he joked about not even being able to drink water because he was so tired of the sea.

After the ABBA quiz Meriam, another entertainer, came to get my paper with my answers. Being a bit tipsy from the Palms Court Garden I told her that she could use my answers as the correct ones, when she would mark the others. Maybe I had a bit of hubris since winning the Bob Marley Quiz earlier too, pretty funny since no one expected an almost albino nerd from Sweden to win it. It turned out I was right and I won the ABBA quiz too, living up to the nerd appearance that I got. After the celebration where I told my name and my origin upon the stage, I went by a man in the audience who had been participtaing in the quiz. He made a joke about me being a cheater because of my Swedish heritage since ABBA also is from Sweden, and I can give him that!

* Best things about Saint Kitts And Nevis – having a great and tipsy day by the pool at the Palms Court Garden, meeting nice people and topping it off by winning the ABBA Quiz, I wish I had seen more of the stunning country side of the island though, and maybe even had a visit to the neighbouring island Nevis

* Most mediocre thing about Saint Kitts And Nevis  – the stunning view at Palms Court Garden was a bit ruined by chairs and tables when you were in the pool, and the whirls in the jacuzzi were too soft for my taste, such first world problems

* Worst things about Saint Kitts And Nevis – the city center and harbour had nothing to offer
