Saint Vincent And The Grenadines

My friend Christofer and I arrived with a cruise ship at one of the 32 islands that make up Saint Vincent And The Grenadines. The control over the country has been shifted several times between Britain and France since the 1700s, and 1979 Saint Vincent And The Grenadines was the last of the Windward Islands (the southern, generally larger islands of the Lesser Antilles, within the West Indies) to become independent. English is still the official language though.

We arrived at the main island Saint Vincent and the capital of Kingstown, not to be confused with Kingston, the capital at Jamaica, where I wished I was instead. Especially when we went off the cruise ship and expected the sunny Caribbean weather and instead got a hard rain in our face and gray skies. Christofer wanted to turn around before we even hit the markets in the city center, but I convinced him to keep on going while I bought an overpriced umbrella. Special price for dumb tourists, but at the same time I thought they needed the money more than I do, so I just didn't care.

We went through overcrowded market streets where we bumped into some natives from time to time who almost were over-friendly and excused themselves so much. It almost felt like they saw tourists as something holy, and I didn't like that feeling so I made sure to let them know it was as much my fault as theirs, and that there was no problem at all. This probably stems from poverty and seeing tourists as an important income to the country.

We went up to the two churches that looked as if they represented good and evil. There's a white and angelic Anglican Church next to a black Catholic Church that looks as if it has been torched by Satan himself, but still stands from it. The view from the overgrown cemetery was amazing and the sky started to slowly turn blue again while the rain came to a halt.

We realized the small capital had nothing more to offer, so we went inside the black Catholic Church before we headed back to the ship.

Is he doing the rain dance?

A taxi driver tried to make us go on a tour with him just before we would enter the ship, and I was quite interested in this since I wanted to see more of the island. I was kind of interested in seeing the sites where they have been shooting the famous movie franchise Pirates Of The Caribbean. Some historians claims that the infamous pirate Blackbeard operated from the second biggest island of this country, called Bequia, so it's a perfect fit that they have been shooting some of these movies here. But when I googled the pictures showing the film set locations, it didn't look that appealing when it would cost us both a lot of time and money to go there so we never went.

I'm sure the many islands of this country has much more to offer than we got to experience, like the Tobago Keys, which is a protected nature reserve with the biggest coral reef of the Atlantic Ocean. It was too far away to go for a day trip though so we would have needed more time to discover that!

Even though we had bad luck with the weather I had more luck when we left the harbour once again in the evening with the cruise ship. It was the International Women's Day so they gave away a free credit of 2 euro at the casino because of Lady Luck, yeah I know, such an awful idea that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. But at least I won 13 euro, even though I thought I had hit the jackpot and won like 400 euro, since I didn't even know how to play. To make sure the bad taste wouldn't go away they also arranged a Man Vs. Woman competition up at the pool area, and I just shook my head when they asked me to join because I thought it was so distasteful.

* Best things about Saint Vincent And The Grenadines – the churches were amazing since they left a mark as a stationary sign of good vs. evil, and you could tell by some of the views from the cruise ship that it's probably a nice island to explore the nature of, if you just leave the capital, which we unfortunately didn't to my regrets

* Most mediocre thing about Saint Vincent And The Grenadines – the small city center had nothing to offer except for loads of crap at markets

* Worst things about Saint Vincent And The Grenadines – for my personal experience it was the weather that was the worst part but as the case in many of the Caribbean countries there are far worse things to worry about, like the fact that homosexuality is illegal in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Section 148 of the Criminal Code states that "any person, who in public or private, commits an act of gross indecency with another person of the same sex, or procures or attempts to procure another person of the same sex to commit an act of gross indecency with him or her, is guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment for five years”. I hope they get educated as soon as possible and stop being so awfully ignorant
