Czech Republic

My dad and I went to Czech Republic, or Czechoslovakia as it was called back then, by bus from Sweden to go and see Sweden play a hockey game against the Czechs. All the stars like Peter Forsberg and Mats Sundin were in the team and if I remember it right it was because NHL was in a lockout.  The only thing I saw on the way from the border between Germany and Czechoslovakia into the capital of Prague were gnomes and women for sale. I was just a kid back then but I could still figure out that the women who stood by the road were trying to get cars to stop by so they could sell sex. I remember I thought it was weird that one of the women even tried to stop our bus for the same reason, I thought it was way too much people on the bus for her and I felt sorry for the women. When we arrived at our hotel in the outskirts of Prague I took a picture of the view from the hotel window and a picture of my dad in the room. That was about the only pictures I took on the ...

Slovakia

The capitals of Austria and Slovakia are so close to each other that it took just an hour to get from Vienna to Bratislava by bus when my friend Erik and I had been visiting Austria for a couple of days. Now it was time to enjoy the poor side of the border and it's weird how two cities that are so close to each other can be like night and day. I just hoped our visit wouldn't turn out as bad as in the horror movie Hostel which is said to take place in Slovakia. We arrived in the autumn and it was raining down on the gray foundation that is the worn down suburbs of Bratislava. My first impression was horrible and I wished we had stayed in the grand and beautiful Vienna instead. Then I quickly understood that it was a big difference between the suburbs of Bratislava where the bus station was located and the city center. When we arrived at the boat hotel on the river Danube that floats through the city, it felt like coming home for me. I had seen the river floating through many...

Romania

The bad thing about going to all countries in the world is that you have to go to places like Romania, when you don't want to. Both me and my friend Andreas didn't want to go so we made Romania a quick stop on the way to Cyprus, so that we would only have to spend one night and the next morning in the capital of Bucharest. When we arrived we quickly understood that Dracula was the superstar even though we weren't in the area of Transylvania. Many things were named after him like alcohol called Draquila and so on. When we got in to the city center we could see that Bucharest is made up of massive areas that are empty, because everybody has to use cars because of the long distances, so no one walks. It's ironic but at the same time quite funny. When we got to the hotel and stepped out on the balcony my expectations about Romania quickly changed, yes it still seemed like a poor country but not in a bad way. It was worn down but had the charm and the nice vibe that I al...

Kosovo

The only thing that comes to mind when I think of Kosovo is war. And it's debatable if it's even a country since its independence is agreed by only a bit more than half of the nations in the UN. Serbia still sees Kosovo as it's territory and right before me and my friend Michael went there for a road trip Serbia sent a train to Kosovo with a loud message about this on the outside of the train. "Kosovo Is Serbia" was written in 21 languages on the train and I was afraid that this was a start of a new war between the countries. Me and Michael came from Macedonia by car and already in the customs to Kosovo I was both excited and scared of what was waiting for us. The roads were very poor and since they were falling apart on the sides you had to drive close to the oncoming traffic to still stay on the road. It's not often that you get happy that you survived every encounter with a car heading in the different direction. One time we went the wrong way and drove o...
